Mastering the “lanic” (laning) phase is the most critical hurdle for any beginner looking to dominate Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games like League of Legends or Dota 2.
The early game dictates your gold flow, your experience levels, and your overall impact on the match. If you fall behind in your lane, it takes monumental effort to recover.
Fortunately, getting a handle on the basic mechanics will quickly push you past the competition. Here are 5 essential tips to help beginners transition from surviving to thriving in their lane. 1. Prioritize Last-Hitting Minions
Gold is the lifeblood of your character’s progression, and the primary way to get it is by landing the killing blow on enemy minions.
Watch Health Bars: Do not mindlessly hit minions; wait until their health bars are nearly empty.
Calculate Tower Shots: When pushed under your turret, learn the damage rhythm. For instance, in League of Legends, full-health melee minions can take two turret shots and one basic attack from you to secure the gold.
Ignore the Enemy: In the first few minutes, focus entirely on securing “creep score” (CS) over forcing risky fights. 2. Understand Wave Priority
“Wave priority” means you have a larger minion wave than your opponent, allowing your wave to push toward their side of the map.
The Minion Shield: A larger allied wave protects you, as enemy minions inflict heavy damage early in the game if the enemy tries to attack you.
Create Map Freedom: When your minions crash into the enemy tower, your opponent is forced to stay and defend. This opens a window for you to safely return to base, secure map vision, or roam to help other lanes. 3. Move Between Your Attacks (Kiting)
Standing perfectly still while your character basic-attacks makes you an easy target for skill-shots and enemy spells.
Cancel Animations: Every attack has a “wind-down” animation after the projectile or hit lands. Input a movement command immediately after the damage registers to cancel this useless animation.
Maintain Positioning: Constantly repositioning makes your movements unpredictable to opponents trying to aim at you. 4. Narrow Your Character Pool
With over a hundred characters available in modern MOBAs, trying to learn all of them at once will stall your progress.
Select 1 to 2 Champions: Pick two simple characters that fit your preferred role and play them exclusively.
Automate Mechanics: By playing the same character repeatedly, their abilities become muscle memory. This frees up your mental energy to focus on the broader map, positioning, and strategy. 5. Master the Hotkeys and Settings
Using sub-optimal settings can actively hold back your mechanical execution.
Enable Quick Cast: This setting fires your abilities instantly at the location of your cursor when you press the key, removing the need for an extra left-click.
Use Attack-Move: Bind the “Attack Move” command (typically the A key). This ensures your character attacks the nearest hostile target even if you accidentally misclick the ground, preventing your character from walking aimlessly into danger.
