How to Show Desktop in Windows: 5 Instant Methods When your screen is cluttered with browsers, documents, and applications, sometimes you just need to get back to the desktop quickly. Whether you are using Windows 10 or Windows 11, there are several fast, built-in ways to minimize everything instantly.

Here are the 5 fastest methods to show your desktop, ranging from keyboard shortcuts to hidden taskbar features. 1. The Classic Keyboard Shortcut (Windows Key + D)

The fastest way to toggle your desktop is by using the keyboard. Method: Press the Windows Key + D simultaneously.

What it does: It immediately minimizes all open windows to show the desktop. Pressing it again will restore your windows to their previous positions. 2. Taskbar “Show Desktop” Button (Far Right Corner)

Windows has a hidden, tiny button in the corner designed for this purpose.

Method: Move your mouse pointer to the extreme bottom-right corner of the taskbar and click the tiny vertical sliver.

Tip: In Windows 11, you may need to enable this in Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors and check the box for “Select the far corner of the taskbar to show the desktop”. 3. The “Peek” Feature (Hover Method)

If you just need a quick glance at your desktop without minimizing everything permanently, you can use the “Peek” feature.

Method: Move your mouse pointer to the extreme bottom-right corner of the taskbar (like method 2) and hover without clicking. Your windows will become transparent, revealing the desktop underneath.

Action: When you move your mouse away, your windows will reappear. 4. Shake Active Windows (Aero Shake)

If you want to keep one window active but minimize everything else, use the “shake” method.

Method: Click and hold the title bar of the window you want to keep, then shake it back and forth.

Result: All other windows will minimize. Shake it again to bring them back.

Note: This feature may need to be enabled in Windows Settings under multitasking. 5. Taskbar “Minimize All” Context Menu If you prefer using the mouse over keyboard shortcuts. Method: Right-click on an empty space on the taskbar. Action: Select Show the desktop from the context menu. Summary of Instant Methods Win + D Instantly hide/show all windows. Corner Click Click the far right edge of the taskbar. Peek Hover over the far right edge of the taskbar. Aero Shake Shake a window to minimize others.
